Delhi High Court turns down petition for fibre optic cables in courts, says government has its priorities

  • The Delhi High Court, on Monday, turned down a petition which asked for optical fibre lines to be laid by telecom companies in all court complexes of the city, and said that even though it’s a good option , it will cost a lot and the “government has its priorities.”
  • The appeal said that lying of such optical fibre would enable fast internet, which would speed up trials of cases through the video conference during the Covid-19 pandemic.
  • However, the court permitted the petitioner to make a representation before the appropriate authorities and directed the authorities to decide on the facts of the case according to the applicable laws, rules, regulations, and policy of the government and also its financial priorities.

Andhra Pradesh HC orders CBI to inquire about social media posts against judiciary

  • The Andhra Pradesh High Court, on Monday, directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to scrutinise social media posts against judges and the judiciary. The high court directed the CBI to investigate whether the attacks on the judiciary were made as a part of a larger conspiracy and if so, take fitting action against the culprits, irrespective of their post and position.
  • The bench of Justices Rakesh Kumar and Uma Devi passed this order in suo motu proceedings, in order to look for an investigation of social media posts and regulation of content, relating to the judiciary, law, judicial process on social media.
  • The court said that the situations under which the judges were being targeted needed to be examined and inspected thoroughly; as such personal attacks were an insult to the judicial wing of democracy.
  • The judges gave complete freedom to the CBI to register a fresh FIR, if needed, and directed the high court registry to give all material, including the writ petition to the CBI.

38 Bollywood celebrities filed petition in Delhi HC against Times Now, Republic TV

  • A petition was filed in the Delhi HC by 38 Bollywood celebrities asking for permanent injunctions against Arnab Goswami and Pradeep Bhandari from Republic TV, and Rahul Shivshankar and Navika Kumar from Times Now “from carrying on reportage and publication of material that violates applicable laws.”
  • The plea mentions that, “The livelihood of persons associated with Bollywood is being severely impacted by the smear campaign being run by the Defendants. This is in addition to the ongoing pandemic which has resulted in extreme revenues and works opportunity loss.
  • The privacy of the members of Bollywood is being invaded, and their reputations are being irreparably damaged by painting the entire Bollywood as criminals, seeped in drug culture, and making being part of Bollywood as synonymous with criminal acts in the public imagination.”
  • It further accuses that these reporters are using phrases including, “dirt”, “filth”, “scum”, and “druggies”.
  • The plea is not seeking for temporary ban, but for permanent prohibition and admonition.

Marriage alone doesn’t give pass for Indian Citizenship to a Foreigner, nor do PAN or Aadhaar: Patna High Court

  • The Patna High Court, on Monday, held that a Foreign National doesn’t automatically become an Indian Citizen only upon marrying an Indian and citizenship can’t be proved by Voter ID, PAN or Aadhaar Card.
  • The case that was being dealt was of  Kiran Gupta vs. State Election Commission, where Kiran was born and brought up in India, but after marrying an Indian, she’s been residing in India since 2003 as his wife, and also voter id card for Bihar elections too.
  • The names of her children born out of the wedlock are registered in India under the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969.
  • Contrary to the order of Election commission, which said she’s not a citizen of India, she approached the Patna HC, and said, that with having Aadhar Card, Voter ID Card, pan card, she also abandoned Nepal’s citizenship, to which, the court said that mere relinquishment of original citizenship does not make one, an Indian citizen.
  • The court also said that, all those things can be possessed by residents also, who are not citizens, so she is not considered a citizen of India.
  • The judgement was delivered by the Bench comprising of Chief Justice Sanjay Karol and Justice S. Kumar.

Couple asks for agreement for Shared Custody of their Dogs as Part of their divorce deal

  • A couple residing in Mumbai had a deal over the custody of their dogs as they seek divorce. The couple had been married for eighteen years and had rescued and adopted 2 Indie pups during that time. But as they divorced, they very well considered the welfare of their pets.
  • According to the divorce deal, the man has the custody of the dogs, while the woman can take the dogs, for a continuous period of 1 month thrice a year. The wife would get “visitation rights at convenient times with prior intimation”.

Karnataka government decides to restrict Mysore’s famous Dasara parade to Palace Ground Amid Pandemic

  • The government decided to restrict the parade to the Palace ground in order to prevent further spread of the virus.
  • The decision was taken at a meeting of ministers and officials convened by Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa to discuss protocols ahead of the 10-day festival from October 17.

Court grants bail to Kerala gold smuggling accused Swapna Suresh in money laundering case.

  • A principal Sessions court in Kochi on Tuesday granted bail to Swapna Suresh, a key accused in the high-profile Kerala gold smuggling case, in connection with a money laundering case being probed by the Enforcement Directorate.
  • However, she will remain in prison as she has also been arrested in another case related to gold smuggling being probed by the National Investigation Agency, which has also slapped the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act against her.
  • The court had reserved its order on the bail plea of Swapna Suresh last week.

Registrar General of India clarifies that Aadhar is not mandatory for birth and death registration

If Aadhaar is provided voluntarily, it must not be printed on any document or stored in any database of births and deaths in full form, according to an RGI circular cited in the RTI response.

In 2017, the RGI had decreed that Aadhaar number would be required for the purpose of establishing the identity of the deceased for the purpose of death registration. However, a 2018 Supreme Court judgment changed the situation.

In its 2019 circular, the RGI noted that “the portion of Section 57 of the Aadhaar Act which enables body corporate and individual to seek authentication was held to be unconstitutional” by the Supreme Court. The RBD Act also had no provision “which permits the use of Aadhaar for establishing the identity of an individual for the purpose of registration of birth and death”, it said.

A man climbs 2 floors and throws acid on 3 sisters sleeping at home, says Cop

Officers said the preliminary enquiry suggested that the inflammable liquid was thrown from the open window of the house; the eldest sister suffered major injuries on face and chest while two other sisters have minor injuries on hands.

Three Dalit sisters – aged 8, 12 and 17 years – were attacked with inflammable liquid, suspected to be acid, while they were sleeping inside their house in Uttar Pradesh’s Gonda district in the early hours of Tuesday, said police officials. There have been no arrests in the incident as yet.

A police official at DGP headquarters in Lucknow said the incident took place in Paska village under Paraspur police station limits of Gonda at around 2.30 am on intervening night of Monday and Tuesday. He said the initial probe revealed that the girls were sleeping in the room on the second floor of the house and the attacker climbed up to throw acid from the open window.

Parliament panel will visit Ladakh to understand working conditions and requirements of soldiers amid India-China standoff

On Tuesday, some officials confirmed that, few of the parliamentarians will visit the Ladakh sector to get first-hand insights into prospects related to high-altitude clothing for soldiers, housing and rations in such time when India and China are locked in a border row and efforts to reduce friction have made no progress.

The visit was finalised after Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury wrote to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla last month saying that the PAC will visit the Ladakh sector to reach out to the soldiers deployed there and understand their working environment and essentials.

The MPs will be reported by senior army officials and Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) scientists during the visit. The PAC scrutinises the accounts of the government and the reports are prepared by the CAG.

Kedarnath Trust allots Rs 120 crore for construction work in temple premises

The Shri Kedarnath Utthan Charitable Trust (SKUCT) has alloted Rs 120 crores for the construction work in the temple premises.

The second phase of the construction work with a cost of Rs 120 crores will be done in Kedarnath Dham, including 50 feet wide walkway, security wall and other such improvements.

The SKUCT has been constituted by the Uttarakhand government in 2017 with a goal to facilitate construction, development, maintenance, aid, renovation, and assistance of all infrastructures at Kedarnath Dham.

Explosion in a club in Kolkata, nobody was injured

  • As Fire exploded early on Tuesday, on the second floor of a club in Beliaghata Main Road, Kolkata, it blew off the local club’s asbestos roof and damaged a portion of its wall in the eastern part of the city,
  • According to officials, no one was injured so far, and a team of forensics reached the site of explosion to collect evidence, and sniffer dogs have been pressed into service to find clues.

North Delhi civic body to be fined Rs 20 lakh for violating dust control norms: Gopal Rai

  • On Tuesday, the Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai issued directions for imposing a fine of Rs 20 lakh on North Delhi Municipal Corporation for violating dust control guidelines at Bhalswa landfill.
  • As according to the minister, the North MCD has not been sprinkling water regularly to prevent dust pollution at the site, even after being directed and told to do so.

Gopal Rai said, “We have issued guidelines for all government and private agencies to take anti-dust pollution measures. We have directed everyone to follow five directives. Action will be taken against anyone not doing so,”

  • The five steps consists of installing windshields and barriers at the periphery of construction and demolition sites, covering debris with tarpaulin, using green net to prevent dust from blowing out, sprinkling of water, and covering the trucks carrying construction material.
  • Rai on Monday asked common people, private agencies and government agencies as well, to follow the guidelines as to prevent dust control and if someone fails to do the same, strict action will be taken against them.
